Bologna

The Palaces and Art of Bologna, Mantova, Ferrara and Ravenna

26th April - 1st May 2022

Day 1    We meet our designated pick-up point & transfer to Heathrow Airport for our direct BA scheduled flight to Bolgna. On arrival in Italy, we are met by our guide, who will accompany us on all day trips and transfers, and we transfer to the centrally located Hotel in Bologna for a five-night stay.  We have dinner included the first evening with the remaining evenings are free to dine out in one of Bologna’s many restaurants.

Day 2    This morning we stay in Bologna where we have a walking guided tour of one of Northern Italy’s finest cities. We visit the Pinacoteca Nazionale, housing works of the great Northern Italian artists including Giotto, Raphael and Perugino, guided tour. In the afternoon we visit the Anatomical Theatre entirely constructed in wood and built in 1637 by Antonio Levanti.

 Day 3    We visits Mantova it begins with a guided tour of the Palazzo Ducale and the Camera degli Sposi in central Mantova. After time for lunch we visit the magnificent Palazzo Te and Giulio Romano’s ‘Room of Giants’ prior to heading back to Bologna.

 Day 4    Our guided tour of Ravenna this morning is a wonderful introduction to the city that was once the capital of Rome’s Western Empire. It inspired the Parminter sisters in their design of A La Ronde. It is one of the great seats of Byzantine art in Europe, and takes in the magnificent Neonian Baptistery  built in the 5th C the oldest monument in Ravenna with wonderful mosaics . We also visit the mosaics of St Vitale and Mausoleo di Galla Placidia. En route back to Bologna this afternoon we visit the beautifully decorated Basilica of Sant’ Apollinare at Classe, dating back to the early 6th century.

Day 5    This morning we enjoy an introductory guided tour of Ferrara which introduces us to one of the region’s greatest walled towns and one of Italy’s hidden gems, with many attractive streets and medieval houses, a 12th century cathedral and the palaces of the d’Este dynasty. The afternoon is at leisure in Ferrara. For those who want to see more art you can visit the Palazzo Diamanti.

Day 6    Today we transfer back to our Heathrow Airport for our BA schedule flight back to the UK with private coach transfer back home.
